Sulawesi’s bamboo “brass” band
We heard about a rare music art form in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, called “musik bambu”, where an entire “brass” band plays on orchestral instruments made totally from bamboo!
After searching near Tomohon town for this bamboo orchestra, we were surprised to stumble upon Trivelino, who is BOTH the maker of the instruments, as well as a bamboo musician!
The self-taught second-generation craftsman sells his instruments to local schools and even takes custom orders from collectors in France and Japan! Surrounded by children from the village of Lemoh, we spent a lovely afternoon listening to Trivelino playing and introducing each of the instruments he made, and about his dreams for the future of traditional bamboo music.
